Fleming Falls Preserve - Observation Deck
Mansfield, OH
<< Back to Project List
The former site of Camp Mowana has been acquired by the Richland County Park District, and has now been repurposed as a nature preserve. While the original structure of the historic Oneida Lodge at the Fleming Falls Preserve could not be saved, a group of former Camp Mowana staff members and campers organized to propose a tribute to Camp Mowana that will be part of the new Fleming Falls Preserve. RKA has conceived a design that recreates the veranda portion of the historic Oneida Lodge, in the exact location it stood for 100 years, creating a contextually fitting Observation Deck as tribute to the original beloved lodge. The iconic original tree trunk columns and tree branch railings will be repurposed as part of the new observation deck. The observation deck can be used by visitors for; events, education, picnics, and as a place for respite and contemplation before or after a hike in the preserve. A path from the new north parking lot will connect to the north side of the new observation deck, which will allow it to serve as a gateway to people visiting Fleming Falls Preserve.
