Designed on the site of a former grist mill on the Olentangy River, the design concept for this custom home is to respond to the history of this site without replicating a building from the past. The heart of the home is the Great Room, prominently located to offer the best views down the riverbank to the ripples in the water caused by the ruins of the former dam. In the shade of the tall trees that line the riverbank, a deck across the entire riverside façade allows the homeowners to enjoy a variety of views to the wildlife along the river. Clad in stone, the central gabled form conveys a story about the “old stone structure” that may have been constructed a century ago with its two more recent frame additions that accommodate bedrooms, the kitchen and the garage. The soft grey standing seam metal roofing along with the fisherman weathervane adds a sense of charm to this “mill site” home along the river.
